Racked.com recently ran an informative piece on beauty products you shouldn't consider buying online. While buying from a reputable source (like Sephora.com or smashbox.com etc) is totally acceptable and a great way to get products which are not available in the local store - HOWEVER there really are some things which you should consider buying in person
1 - FOUNDATION
Even if you have worn the same shade over and over again for years - it is always worth popping in to have your color tested and see what new products are on the market. A product which looks as if it would suit your skin online might be totally different in person. If the website is less then official it could also mean that you are exposing yourself to a world of infections and problems if the product is counterfeit - I would strongly advise avoiding places like Ebay for example on this one!!!!
2- FRAGRANCE
We have all smelt a counterfeit perfume at some point. It reeks. Its clearly a fake and you know it the minute you smell it. If your sure that the perfume you are buying is real and your happy to pay for it online - its worth smelling it in person and not taking the word of the imaginery online sales person for how good it smells. For example the new DKNY cupcake perfume things smell god awful - this I would not know if I hadn't nearly retched over the Key Lime Pie one in Boots yesterday.
3 - BRUSHES
There are fakes out there. Seriously, MAC have never and will never do a role of 25 brushes for €35. Seriously, if the offer is that good - question it. These brushes are synthetic and terrible - they fall apart after one of two uses and what good is that? The wrong brush with the wrong fibres can set off allergies or irritate your skin too. If your in doubt and it sounds too good to be true then walk away. If the source is reputable then all fine and well but it is worth popping into a store where the artist can advise you on the best brush to suit your make-up needs before you buy. You can actually save money by getting a quality brush which does the right job for your make-up instead of repeatedly buying the wrong ones or replacing fakes.
4 - SOMETHING NEW
If your the type of girl who buys the same shades over and over - ordering them online is more then likely faster and easier - but if you fancy something new then pop into your local store to have the artist show you how to wear it. She or He could recommend something you never thought of before. It saves buying a product which you may never use and which will sit on your shelf for the next few years unused. A lot of the time - this is people going for brighter or darker shade then their normal lipstick or eyeshadow. A good artist will recommend ways to wear it if you decide it is too dark and you want to lighten it.
5 - PERSCRIPTION ANYTHING
If you have a product which has been recommended by your doctor - then for the love of god - do not mess around and try to save a few bob by buying it online. Go to the source and buy directly and save yourself a lot of hassle.
