Beyoncé breaks down in tears as she reveals she lost her uncle to an HIV related illness and admits it was 'one of the most painful experiences of her life' during GLAAD Awards speech

Beyoncé broke down in tears on stage at the GLAAD Awards, when she revealed she had lost her uncle Johnny to an HIV related illness. The singer, 37, was comforted by her husband Jay Z as she said that losing her family member was 'one of the most painful experiences of her life.'

The Formation singer accepted the Vanguard Award at the 30th annual event held at the Beverly Hilton hotel, where she described Johnny as 'the most fabulous gay man I have ever met'. Talking about the loss of her uncle for the first time, she said: '[He lived] his truth and was brave and unapologetic at a time when this country wasn't as accepting. 'Witnessing his battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences I've ever lived... I'm hopeful that his struggled served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely.'

She added that 'LGBTQI rights are human rights', with the crowds cheering as she continued her acceptance speech. She said: 'To choose who you love is your human right. How you identify and see yourself is your human right. Who you make love to and take that ass to Red Lobster is your human right.'
No other details about Johnny are known and it has not been revealed when he passed away.
The couple joined a host of stars at the event, which celebrates accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community within the media.
